Tokyo’s Toyosu Tuna Auction & Market

I’m not sure how high the Toyosu Tuna Auction appears on all those “To Do in Tokyo” lists, but it should be. This is a very unique experience and worth getting a very early start on one of your days wandering Tokyo. The one and only famous tuna auction is at Toyosu Market, the biggest fish market in the world.

Watching Tokyo’s Tuna Auction

First off, it’s an early morning. The auction starts at 5:30am until 6:30am. There are two options to observe the auction:

  1. From the floor: There are 27 spots on the floor to observe the auction, and you’ll need to reserve that in advance. There’s no cost for this. Here, you’re up close and personal with the tuns and can really see the massiveness of these fish.
  2. From the observation deck: If you’re unable to get on the floor, no problem, you can observe and hear the auction from the upper observation area. Also, at no cost.

You can take a cab to get to Toyosu Market early enough. Ask the cab driver to drop you off at Shijomae Station because cab drivers are not allowed to drop passengers off at the fish market gates, they’re too busy in the morning.

After the Tuna Auction, be sure to stroll along the market and grab some tasty sushi and other fish goodies, even at 7am its delicious!
